Goodbye 2E5!
Dear 2E5,
Sorry to have missed you at the staff room the other day. My colleagues told me that a few of you came to look for me and left me 'flowery' messages. I have read all of them and thought all of you were incredibly sweet and kind to have written those notes of thanks. Even Patrick was sweet for once!
Thank you for making my ten weeks at Jurong West a very memorable one (even though I believe I have spent half the time scolding you in class)! I hope you understand that your teachers reprimand you only because we see potential in each one of you and hope to see that you grow up to be responsible citizens with integrity.
Even though I wouldn't be back to check your mid-year papers with you, please update me your grades on the blog.
I will keep this blog till the end of the year so if you have any queries, feel free to post them on the blog. I will set up an entry for that.
Put in effort for the rest of your subjects. Yes, Lim Jun Hao - put down your game console and go study for your examinations! I look forward to seeing all of you next term in school :)

Tell me about one thing that you have enjoyed about your class camp
Next week, we are going to learn how to write factual and personal recounts. For the purpose of this writing task, could I ask all of you to reflect on your NYAA class camp? Jiawei told me that amidst the frequent fights and squabbles, most of you had a lot of fun. So what had you enjoyed the most during the Secondary Two NYAA camp? In your comments, I would truly appreciate it if you could tell me one thing (just one thing) that you had enjoyed on the camp.
Jacob's Ladder - What is a suitable piece of music to convey the mood of Chapter 1?

In this weekend blog assignment, read Chapter 1 of Jacob's Ladder. What do you think is the mood created by the writer? We agreed in class last Wed that the narrative was suspenseful. There were many questions which Jacob had asked but very few were answered.
Therefore, identify the mood of the narrative account and find a piece of music or song on youtube that conveys it (N.B. copy and paste the URL of the video clip in your comments). Tell me why you think your selection is suitable. We would conduct a class poll to identify the most appropriate background music for Chapter 1.

Are you ready for the new term?
Welcome back 2E5. I doubt I will see you during the first week because you would away on the NYAA camp. Enjoy your camp and forge stronger ties of friendship among yourselves. Set aside some of your prejudices and pre-formed impressions of one another at the camp and learn to work together as a group. When I meet you in Week 2, I hope to hear many stories about your NYAA camp.
It is very encouraging to see most of you share about your favourite songs. Some (like Azira) had done a great job in describing the MV while others (like Yan Lu) had shared intimately and personally about the song and how it related to them.
I am still in the process of savouring your songs - I have chosen these two for the first presentation on Tuesday 31/03/09. Hou Tian and Yen Hong, could you do us the honour? Thank you.

SINGAPORE : Nanyang Technological University (NTU) said it had sent three warning letters to David Widjaja, before terminating his ASEAN undergraduate scholarship in February.
The Indonesian student fell to his death on Monday after stabbing his professor, Associate Professor Chan Kap Luk, in the school.
According to NTU, Widjaja's academic performance was not good enough under the requirements of the ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarship award.
Between August 2007 and August last year, he was given three letters by NTU, advising him to improve his studies.
The letters also asked him to seek help and to inform NTU if there were any circumstances affecting his performance. NTU said special considerations are given for valid reasons such as a medical condition, depression and family problems.
Copies of the letters were also mailed to his parents. As his performance did not improve, the scholarship was terminated last month.
NTU said no refund was required as there is no bond attached to the scholarship - apart from the three-year bond applicable to all international students under the tuition grant scheme.
With the termination of the scholarship, the final-year student would have had to pay S$3,360 in tuition fees. The scholarship termination letter also states that financial aid is available should he need it.
According to NTU, financing this payment was not a problem for the family of David Widjaja. - CNA/ms

A little more about myself
I guess I wouldn't be able to elicit a response from you unless I start the ball rolling. (Start the ball rolling means to start an activity.)
First things first - introduction. Hello 2E5 - I am Mr WJ Leong, your English teacher for the next ten weeks. (Boring!) I love travelling and am a self-professed avid photographer. (See some of my photographs from Yosemite National Park in the States in the post.) I love to sing and I used to train in a choir but now I only sing in the bathroom. Next term, we are going to incorporate songs in our English learning. I can be persuaded to sing :)
